I have owned this feeder for two years now. I am very pleased. The springs are on the INSIDE. It is indeed squirrel proof. It seems that at least one tries, without success, each day. I did add a 4" dowel to each perch and this helps the birds to sit and feed. It is full of birds many times during the morning and evening.

Maybe I just have gifted squirrels, but they still manage to get into this feeder. Even when the cage 'locks,' they can still sweep their claws into the feeder openings and scoop out seed for their buddies below. Also, the clear portion of the feeder is not glass, and they may chew through the top when it 'locks' (had to epoxy a portion of a milk jug over the large hole they left behind).
Not worth the price...

Someone gave me this item as a gift. The springs broke within a month. I've tried to locate the manufacturer to replace the springs, but the information on the box sends me to someone who says the product isn't available any longer. So the feeder is going into the trash can.

I can't imagine this feeder being dangerous for birds ("Guillotine"). My birds are too fast and vigilant to remain perched when a larger bird or squirrel approaches. This feeder really is squirrel proof. Just don't hang it next to a post or anything from which a squirrel could reach.

I really love this feeder--it's got a pretty sturdy build and we get a lot of birds on it.
BUT
It doesn't even slightly deter the squirrels. The springs are easily dislodged, and the squirrels completely know how to get around the supposedly "squirrel-proof" system. Seriously, if you're looking to deter squirrels with this one, then don't waste your money--AT ALL.
